What Are The Chances Of Acquiring HIV After Water From Wound Of HIV Fell Into My Eyes?
HI, I am a nurse and while i was cleaning the wound of an HIV positive patient, the water (which might have contained the blood) splashed into my eyes. I am very worried. what are the chances of me acquiring HIV, and what should i do? this happened an hour ago
Explanation, 1. You said that you are sister and while cleaning the wound of hiv infected person it split into the eyes and mentioned that the fluid is associated with blood 2. There is moderate risk of hiv transmission in this case because the blood from the wound of hiv infected person fall on to the mucous membrane of your eyes 3. The immediate medication that you can follow as prophylaxis is combination of Stavudine and Lamivudine tablets twice a day for 20-30 days 4. On the 21st day of exposure kindly do one of the laboratory test which i mentioned here as follows a)RNA polymerase test b)PCR TEST IF both or any one of the test are negative then the risk of exposure is very minimal
Hope this information helps
