What Are The Chances Of Being Anemic In A Diabetic Patient?
my HGB is 11.3, my MCV 80.3, MCH 25.3 AND RDW 15.3. I AM A 57 YR OLD FEMALE WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES. I RECENTLY (6/9) HAD SURGERY ON MY FOOT FOR A SPIDER BITE TO REMOVE INFECTION. I WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR 4 DAYS AND ON BAG ANTIBOTICS THE WHOLE AND CAME WITH ANTIBOTICS (2 TYPES) FOR 14 DAYS. MY DOCTOR IS SAYING I AM ANEMIC. OF COURSE I FEAR THE WORST SUCH AS COLON CANCER AND LOSS OF BLOOD CAUSING THIS. JUST WOULD LIKE AN OPINION.
Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM. From the report I think you have mild anemia (according to WHO cut off for Hb level for non-pregnant women above 15 years). A low borderline MCV, slightly low MCH with slight anisocytocis (slightly high RDW) is there. This may suggest Iron deficiency anemia. However, there may have been blood loss during surgery. So, to confirm an IDA you need to have two tests done- serum ferritin, TIBC. You should also have a stool examination for occult blood (Stool for OBT) to rule out any occult blood coming from your gastrointestinal tract. For the time being I don't feel you should be so fearful of having colon carcinoma. Even a peptic ulcer disease or parasite in the intestine can cause the problem or as you have said the blood loss during surgery. But, one thing is important that you have developed anemia and if it is IDA, you will need to be on iron supplement for 6 months to correct the hb level and replenish the body store of iron. So, please consult your doctor or write back to us with the reports done without being so much concerned about colon cancer. Thanks and regards.Dr. Kaushik
