What Are The Chances Of Getting Pregnant After Having An Unprotected Sex And By Taking A Postpone 72 ?
My last period was on November 11th. I skipped my period in December. My cycle has been very irregular lately because I took an emergency contraceptive pill in the months of July and October. So I am not able to tell when I would have ovulated. I was so relieved when I got my period in November and was not sexually active but skipped my December period anyway. On December 30th I had unprotected sex and six hours later I took postpone 72 What are my chances of getting pregnant? Will it provide extra protection if I take another dosage of postpone 72? Since I have used emergency contraception in June and October also this year, will it lessen the chances of the pill working now?
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.
Emergency contraception is >90% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is not currently recommended that patients take a second dose - i.e. this would have no added benefit in terms of preventing pregnancy.
With regard to the pill, you should definitely get on it as soon as possible. It is perhaps the only way that you will confidently regulate your cycle and not be in a position to always have to use emergency contraception. Remember to also take a pregnancy test now and again in two weeks.
I hope that this helps and good luck!
