What Are The Chances Of Losing Voice Post Thyroid Gland Surgery?
Hi i am worried about my mums thyroid gland surgery due in a few weeks. My main concern is her voicebox, what are the chances of her losing her original voice? If the voice is slightly different is this permanent? I am reading comments on google and getting quite concerned with a large amount of people stating their voice has changed?
Hello and thank you for asking! I have gone carefully through your concern regarding to your mother's health. Yes, you are right, voice changes is one the most common complications of thyroidectomy, occurring in 1 % of the cases. It depends on the volume of the goiter and on the surgeon experience. The more experienced the doctor is, the less probability for nerve damages. Anyway, in most of the cases is temporary and the voice gets back to normal within 6 months. In very rare cases the damage can be irreversible. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
