What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy After Partial Hysterectomy?

I had a hysterectomy in January 2006. It was a partial, as I don t have my uterus but I still have my ovaries. My current physician s assistant said she saw no sign of a cervix when she performed my most recent pelvic exam and pap smear. However, I continue to have abnormal cells growing around what used to be my cervix. I am very confused as to if I do still have a cervix or not. However, my main question is this - I think I may be pregnant. I know this sounds nearly impossible, but here are my symptoms: recent occasional loss of appetite in the mornings, dramatic increase in appetite, weight gain of 20 pounds, and hormone changes. I nearly bought a home pregnancy test today but my daughter was with me and I didn t want her to know so I didn t buy it. I also had a tubal ligation in 2002 but I know women can still get pregnant even with their tubes tied. A friend of mine did. Is there any possibility I could be pregnant with my symptoms I listed? My boyfriend would be absolutely floored and I m worried he would think I lied about the hysterectomy as he doesn t want more children, even though I have proof through medical records that I had it done. Can you please help? Thanks!

Hi,

It is highly unlikely to get pregnant after a partial hysterectomy, as the uterus is removed in this surgery. However, in rare cases, there may be some residual tissue left, which can cause abnormal cell growth and mimic pregnancy symptoms.

It's important to note that the symptoms you described can have other causes besides pregnancy, such as hormonal imbalances or changes in diet and exercise. The best way to confirm whether or not you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test or visit a doctor for a blood test.

If you do turn out to be pregnant, it is important to consult with a medical professional right away, as pregnancy after a hysterectomy can be a high-risk situation for both the mother and the fetus.

Overall, it is highly unlikely to get pregnant after a hysterectomy, but if you have any concerns or symptoms, it is best to consult with a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
