What Are The Chances Of Progression Of HIV Showing Up Positive?

hello doctor....I had a possible hiv exposure in December 2015..and another possible exposure on February 13th with oral sex.... first tested the end of February when my body felt weird....first test was a combo antigen and antibody test which was negative...but I was so scared I keep getting tested week after ....kept coming negative...still my body wasn t normal....don t know if it was anxiety or stress both...so I would keep getting tested every month up until now....I also got a hiv1 rna quantitative test from my doctor...that was negative hiv1 ab and hiv 2 about was also negative...which June 6th was my last test which was day 115....what are my chances of late progression of hiv showing up positive? I am now scared to take another test because I m afraid it will show up positive....does anything alter the results of a hiv test? should I get tested again?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The HIV antibody test or ELISA test is the very accurate test as it detects the antibodies developed by the body in response to the HIV virus if it is present in the blood.

The antibodies can be detected in the infected person's blood as soon as within 10 days after the possible exposure. However, they can be detected as late as 86 days of the possible exposure.

In your case, the last possible exposure was end of February. Your last test was done on the 115th day of the possible exposure. As that test has come negative, there are 97% chances that you are HIV negative, which is the most accurately any test can tell. Thgus, you can stop worrying about being HIV positive and make sure you use protective measures such as condom next time so that you can avoid such anxiety.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
