i am 38 years old and i have type 2 diabetes and i want to get pregnant .my last a1c was 5.3%. i wear glasses i get yearly eye exams. i get routine blood test so far everything is good. but i am afraid to get pregnant because i am afraid of complications.
Hello there, I can understand your concern of getting pregnant with diabetes but let me assure you that there is no harm in getting pregnant and with good control of diabetes and regular follow ups pregnancy outcomes are very much normal even in diabetics. Your present glucose control seems appropriate for you to go ahead and consider pregnancy however you need to visit your diabetologist once and get your medications changed if there are any that cannot be used in pregnancy. During your pregnancy you may need to be on insulin if the situation demands and you need to check your sugars more closely with a glucose monitoring device. You need to get eye examinations for diabetic retinopathy which may sometimes worsen during pregnancy (if you already have any retinopathy changes). I would say please go ahead and get pregnant without any fears in mind but rather be more vigilant with your blood sugars and have a healthy baby. Hope this helps. Take care.
