Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Complications Of Having Low Lying Placenta During Early Pregnancy?
M 16weeks pregnant and a recent scan reveals that I have a low lying placenta with just 1.5cm from the internal os. My first delivery was also placenta previa and a c-section was done and a healthy daughter was born. I am very worried now as my second pregnancy is again a low lying placenta. What precautions should I take?
In some women, the placenta attaches low in the uterus and may cover the cervix (low lying placenta). Now you are at 16 weeks of gestation. In most cases, the placenta moves upwards as the uterus enlarges with progress of time. So a watchful wait strategy will be applicable in your case. However, in some women the placenta continues to lie in the lower part of the uterus in the last months of pregnancy. This condition is known as placenta praevia. You may bleed in the second half of pregnancy if placenta continues to lie lower. Bleeding can be heavy and you may need a caesarean section to prevent heavy bleeding during delivery. Keep in contact with your obstetrician and get an ultrasound done at 24 weeks. Further decision will be taken as per ultrasound report. I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question Thanks
