a few years ago i found out i had trichomonasis and had had it for 2 years without knowing, i am now thinking of starting a family but its eating me up worrying my past infection may have left me infertile.
what are the complications of trichomonasis? can it leave you infertile?
I am not able to assess whether you are a male or female from your question.
Trichomoniasis in male almost asymptomatic except a rare tingling sensation of urethra. In female, it may produce excessive white discharge, odor, mild itching genitalia. Excessive discharge hampers the sperm motility and leads to infertility. Low birth weight child and premature delivery can occur with Trichomoniasis. The diagnosis confirmed with smear (wet and dry) examination and treatment to patient and contacts will solve the problem easily Dr S.Murugan
The common vaginal infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis can play a significant role in infertility. Infection of the cervical canal prevents sperm transport by the toxic metabolic products of this organism and intrauterine infection results in scanty, sub-optimal development of the endometrium which then causes infertility.
Pregnant women who have trichomoniasis may have the following complications: Deliver prematurely Have a baby with a low birth weight Transmit the infection to the baby as it passes through the birth canal
In non pregnant and pregnant women, having trichomoniasis also appears to make it easier for women to become infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. This holds good only to those who are exposed to HIV. It does not mean that trichomoniaisis causes HIV.
