What Are The Effects Of Drinking Water Containing High Levels Of Manganese?

I just received a Consumer water report for our area that indicates that we have high levels of manganese in our drinking water. The levels are at 570 with the MCL acceptable level set at 300. I am concerned about the side effects. What can you tell me about the affects? YYYY@YYYY

Hello,

Though the human body needs a small amount of manganese for normal growth and functioning, it is not at all safe to take water with a very high manganese content. If the water in your area has high manganese content then you should get the water purified via Water purifying projects that oxidizes and filters water making it suitable for drinking before supplying it to the houses.

Drinking water with high manganese content may cause toxicity; manifesting symptoms of permanent neurological disorder. Other symptoms may include difficulty in walking, tremor, muscle spasms, irritability or aggressiveness. In case you have any of these symptoms you should get Nerve conduction tests, nerve biopsy and imaging (CT, MRI, EEG, ETC) tests done so that treatment can be started. It may also stain laundry and give an unpleasant taste to the water. Hope i have answered your question.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
