Hi- I'm not a doctor, just a well read mother of two children on the
autism spectrum. A few years ago I started testing the GF/CF diet with both myself (I have
chronic pain &
tiredness) and my children. The recommendations I have read about supplements while using this diet are - vit M b-12 (we use lollipops since the methal b12 has to enter either through the mouth or via injection), Cod
Liver Oil, vit d, a regular multi-vitamin, vit c, and fiber. When starting ANYONE on the GF/CF diet please do it slowly. Replace one
gluten food every three days or so depending on the symptoms of withdrawal shown by the child. I also read when switching milk it's best to start by doing 1/4 of the new milk substitute with 3/4 of regular milk to have the child get used to the new taste slowly, otherwise they may reject the new milk (coconut has worked well for us, as has non-gmo soy milk, there is also rice, almond and others to choose from). The kids may have a period of time when they actually behave worse or will even refuse to eat the new food. Slow introduction is the best way to go. Salt baths help with pulling the toxins out quicker, but will also cause a day of 'off' behavior (from what I've witnessed of my own children). With no gluten, it doesn't mean no bread.. It just means using different grains. Quinoa is the best substitute for wheat - it still has the protein, fat and carb content but it actually helps alkaline the body as opposed to creating a more acidic environment. No matter what our food choices are we still need high-grade quality supplements. Maybe start by taking a vitamin/Mineral sample before starting the diet and then you'll have a baseline to work from when further monitoring the child. It's my understand that most people who cannot tolerate gluten will most likely have some sort of
vitamin deficiency since absorption is not happening properly. Best of luck!
