What Are The Ill Effects Of Smoking Marijuana?

I am having arhoscopy of my shoulder for a full thichness rotator cuff tear and a slap tear in 2 weeks or longer if I choose too. I haven't smoked marijuana for over 20 years until about 6 months ago I started smoking for medicinal purposes to help with migraines and pain from my neck and shoulder. I only smoke about 5 days a week, just at night before bed, and usually take 1-2 hits. How long should I quit before surgery and could I have complications with such a small use?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I understand your concern. Marijuana interacts with most drugs used in anesthesia and studies have shown that patients who are regular marijuana users have higher tolerance for anesthetic drugs, therefore higher doses as well as the addition of other anesthetic drugs are needed for these patients to achieve a satisfactory level of pain reduction.
Five times a day makes you a regular user. So I recommend you stop smoking in the two weeks leading to the procedure.

Wishing you good luck and all the best.
