Hi I have been taking encorate 200 since 1998 for absence epilepsy. The last seizure I had was in 2003. I have a healthy 4 ur old daughter. Now I m planning to conceive second time. Is it possible to continue with the same medicine and what are the side effects of using encorate for a long period. What are d substitutes which do not induce sleep?
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. If you are planning time concive then you should definitely change your seizure medicine. Encorate is teratogenic to the developing baby. So it should be replaced by newer, safer anticonvulsant like lemotrigine, topiramate etc. So better to consult neurologist and discuss this issue. You need to worry first taper down Encorate and gradually increase the dose of newer drug. Don't suddenly stop the Encorate or start new one. This newer drugs are non sedative. So don't worry. Newer drugs are available which are safe in pregnancy. So discuss about starting this newer drug if you want to concive. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
