What Are The Long-term Side Effects Of Trazodone?

Is there evidence or research on long-term side effects of trazodone, specifically how such use might cause chronic urinary retention? I am a 58 year old male, and have been taking trazodone for nightime relaxation and sleep for over 15 years. I am suffering from uriniary retention and have been diagnosed with mild BPH and overactive bladder. No medications have helped my condition, including Jalyn for prostate, or VESIcare for OAB. Trazodone causes priapism and I m wondering if long term damage has been done, and what is the treatment for such damage?

Hello,

Trazodone may cause urinary retention as a possible side effect. On the other hand, BPH can also cause urinary retention.
You will need to do a thorough prostate exam to make sure if it is the primary cause of urinary retention in your case.
Also, you may talk to your doctor and decide if other treatments instead of trazodone can be used for your sleep problems.
