What Are The Mesial Temporal Sclerosis Surgery Implications?

My wife aged 23 yrs is suffering with complex partial seizures since the age of 3. She was on medication of about 3 yrs till the age of 6. Recurred again at the age of 12 & 19. MRI scan suggests "Left Mesial temporal sclerosis" The medication she is taking of no use and the doctors suggested her to go for surgery. I am concerned about the surgical procedure and would like to understand the implications of the surgery Please share your thoughts on this. Thanks Raju

I understand your concern, brain surgery can seem like a frightening procedure.
Of course any surgery has its own risks, even the simplest ones and the decision depends also on how frequent the seizures are and how much they affect her quality of life.
What I can say to encourage you though is that it is not a highly difficult procedure for the neurosurgeon and the risk of neurological complications is low. Regarding the effect on the seizure control it's pretty good, in 80% of the cases complete seizure control can be achieved. Naturally that is in cases where it has made been certain that the medial temporal sclerosis is at the origin (meaning the type of seizures and the EEG report correspond to that region of the brain as well).
