What Are The Recurrence Of Parathyroids After Thyroid Surgery?

I have had both of my thyroids removed. Over 34 years ago. There was a malignant tumor on the left so they removed both. I went through the course of radioactive iodine, followed up for five years, all is clear. I now have high calcium and Vitamin D levels. I have read that a cause could be parathyroids. If having my thyroids removed, would I still have my parathyroids?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello and thank you for asking!
One of the most common side effects of the thyroidectomy is hypoparathyroidism ( the removal of the parathyroid glands).
It is manifested with the signs and symptoms of hypocalcemia.
It may be transitory or permanent. If the parathormone levels are very low post intervention, it is likely that the hypocalcemia will persist for long.
Often it is transitory and lasts less then one year.
Hope i was helpful.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
