What Are The Repercussions Of Accidental Ingestion Of Tums And Ibuprofen By Infant?
My 3 year old got into my purse and ate a 1000 strength Tums and a 200 mg ibuprofen. Should I be concerned? I ve found lots of answers that just one of these is not too much concern but what about the combo? Will the tums help him with any stomach upset of the ibuprofen or will it make things worse like slowing the absorption? He weighs about 36 lbs
Tums is an antacid which actually neutralizes the stomach acidity and hence can not only prevent the stomach irritant effects of ibuprofen but also delays its absorption.
However, since your son has consumed a bit large dose of tums it may cause vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, bone/muscle pain, headache, confusion, increased thirst/urination, and unusual tiredness.
If any of these effects persist or worsen he should be clinically evaluated and treated.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
