Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Repercussions Of Discontinuing Levothyroxine?
Hi doctor, I have been taking levothyroxine for the past 20 years after my thyroid been remove (goiter) And now I stop taking it with out consulting my doctor. I am tired of taking this medication, so what happen if I keep continue not to take my medication? Please advise thank you!!
As your Thyroid gland has been removed your body no longer shall produce Thyroxin hormone naturally, so it is essential to take the hormone externally in form of Levothyroxine. This hormone controls the basic metabolic rate of your body and your systems shall not function properly in absence of the hormone.
If you discontinue the medication you will land into Hypothyroidism. The symptoms will be more aggressive in your case as there is no source of Thyroxin in your case.
Hope that helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks, Dr. M Zahoor Bhat
