What Are The Risks And Benefits Of Having Robotic Assisted Surgery?
Hello, I m scheduled to have robotic assisted adhesiolysis and appendectomy surgery in July. This will be my 4th abdominal surgery and 3rd to correct adhesion issues. This will be my first time having robotic assisted surgery and my surgery is expected to take much longer this time then my previous operations. My question is what are the risks and benefits of having robotic assisted surgery? will my recovery time be longer? am I at a greater risk for complications or death because of my previous surgeries? thank you for your time! Jess
Robotic surgery is performed by devices and so their functions may fail in a very small percentage of cases. The intervention lasts much more than open surgery so the risks of possible respiratory and cardiac complications during anesthesia are higher. The tactile sensation is not present in the device so it may happen the damage of adjacent organs, nerves or blood vessels. Also it exists higher risk of blood clots in the legs.
Of course there are potential benefits that makes this procedure prefered in your case. The actions during intervention are more accurate .The recovery time is shorter. After 24 hours after intervention you may go at home. It experiences less pain than usual. About any greater risk because of the previous surgeries i am saying, 'No'. The risk is the same as before each intervention. If you have had any complication after any of the previous surgeries you should tell to the anesthesiologist.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
