What Are The Risks Of Flying Post Open Reduction And Internal Fixation?

I had an ORIF on my left fibula in Aug last year and am about to get the implant and 5 screws removed next week. I understand that the operation will take about 45 minutes after which I will have stitches for about two weeks. My question is, how soon after the surgery can I fly long haul? The flight is about 12hrs. What are the risks of flying the day after the surgery?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There are various issues of flying over a long period of time particularly after surgery of orthopedics such as:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Respiratory issues
- Provoked pain episodes
- Postural hypotension
- Dizziness
- Vertigo, vomiting
- secondary trauma via other passenger body parts or else

Kindly discuss the same with your treating orthopedic surgeon before booking the flight ticket.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
