What Are The Side Effects Of Acyclovir?

I have been taking 400 mg twice a day of acyclovir for over 15 years to suppress my immunine system for the herpes kertatis ( shingle virus) I developed 25 years ago and ended up having a cornea transplant 2003. I still take this today. No return of the herpes keratitis but I wondering about the long term use.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Acyclovir do not cause many side effects. However, the most important long term side effect of acyclovir is its adverse effect on kidneys which can even.lead to kidney failure. Make sure that you undergo rena function tests every 6 to 8 months and drink plenty of water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
