Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Though 66 years old, I continue to work a full time job. I have stiffness and back pain due to the work I do although I m sure this is also associated with my age as well. I began to take Aleve once per day and after one week I noticed that I had less stiffness and pain. When I told my Doctor what I was doing, he advised against it saying that Aleve can cause bleeding in the stomach. He said that I should take no more than two Aleve per week. What is your opinion?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Aleve contains naproxen, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. It is used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains in the body such as headache, muscle aches, tendonitis, dental pain and menstrual cramps. Stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, constipation, headache and drowsiness are common side effects experienced by the intake of the drug. Overdose and prolonged use can result in esophagitis, peptic ulcerations, gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation. Hence, this drug needs to be taken with caution and after food to minimize such side effects and never on empty stomach. Kindly follow what has been advised by your doctor. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
