What Are The Side Effects Of Ayprogestrin?

Hello, Due to abnormal heavy menstrual bleeding my dr has put me on Ayprogestrin. I am 56 years old and have never taken a birth control pill ever. I am concerned about blood clots as I read that it could be one of the side effects. Is there anything I can do to prevent one from possibly developing?

Hi,

Ayprogestrin is a medication that contains a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It is used to treat various menstrual disorders, including heavy bleeding. Like any medication, Ayprogestrin can cause side effects. Some of the possible side effects of Ayprogestrin include:
* Blood clots: As you mentioned, Ayprogestrin may increase the risk of blood clots, especially in women who are over 35 years old and smoke.
* Changes in menstrual bleeding: Ayprogestrin can cause changes in menstrual bleeding, including irregular bleeding, spotting, or even no bleeding at all.
* Nausea: Some women may experience nausea when taking Ayprogestrin.
* Breast tenderness: Ayprogestrin may cause breast tenderness or enlargement.
* Headaches: Headaches are a possible side effect of Ayprogestrin.

To reduce your risk of developing blood clots, it is recommended that you avoid smoking and maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, you should try to stay active and avoid sitting or standing in one position for too long.

If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking Ayprogestrin, such as leg swelling or chest pain, it is important to contact your doctor immediately. They may want to evaluate you for a blood clot.

It is also important to keep all of your follow-up appointments with your doctor while taking Ayprogestrin to monitor your response to the medication and assess for any potential side effects.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
