Hello All, My Wife is pregnent (32 weeks) and yesterday we went for her regular checkup. As per all reports and my wife s condition is perfectly all right, her blood group is B +ve. But doctor has writen to take 3 Amp of Betnesol Injections 2 days (with 24 hrs gap). My wife has taken Dose of injection for 2 days. Today i was reading the articles about this injuction and i am much worried. Could you please advice if there is any harm for my wife and baby in taking the Betnesol Injection.
Betnesol (betamethasone) is a corticosteroid commonly prescribed to increase the surfactant levels to enhance the process of lung maturity in preterm babies thus to prevent complications involving the heart, lungs and brain in the new born.
Common side effects in the mother include high blood sugar, increase appetite and weight gain, heartburn, gastritis or stomach ulcer, muscle weakness, or high blood pressure. It may also cause mood changes, anxiety, confusion and sleep disturbances.
Common side effects in the baby include temporarily slowing of the baby's heart rate and body movements, and slowed growth. It may also cause the baby to make less of its own steroid hormones after birth, but this usually resolves on its own and rarely causes any problems.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
