Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just been told I have high cholesterol. 141/262. I don t want to take Statin drug (Crestor) What would the side effects be? I also take Oxybtynin, Diclofenac, Pantoprazole SOD, Levothyroxine, Metoprolol, Venlafaxine. Also a number of supplements including Omega 3 Krill Oil and COQ10. I m 5 2 and weight 189. Is it safe to try to control my cholesterol before I start a statin drug?
Crestor (rosuvastain) is a statin. Statins are associated with muscle symptoms, neuropathy and sometimes new onset diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, the recent opinion is that the benefits still outweigh the risk. Statins are considered most effective in decreasing lipid levels. You can continue statins by discussing about the above risks with your prescriber. Also you can go for other drugs like ezetamibe that does not have such side effects. But the effectiveness is also less. And yes physical exercise and other lifestyle modifications will also help. You have the option of giving a trial of lifestyle modifications. But if you were my patient I would have advised lifestyle modifications with low dose medications for optimal control. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful day.
