Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband aged 30 is having subcortical epilepsy. He had first seizure around 7. He took Encorate 200 course after which he was fine. 13 years later he had another seizure when he was Encorate chrono 300. Now again had seizure for which he is taking Encorate chrono 500 twice a day and frisium 5mg at night. How long can these medicines be taken without side effects? As I see the dose is increasing and I fear that the disease is getting severe every next time it appears, does it have any permanent treatment?
The duration of treatment needed and chance of any permanent cure depends on the cause of seizure and findings on lab tests including EEG test and MRI brain. From the details given here, it seems we may need to continue treatment for years, sometimes lifelong. To consider stopping treatment, we need a normal EEG, normal MRI and 3-5 years seizure free interval. But, as I said, it depends on many features. Kindly discuss with your neurologist.
You need not worry about side effects. Valproate is a commonly used drug and most people tolerates it well, although some may experience side effects. But leaving seizure uncontrolled will be much more harmful.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
