What Are The Side Effects Of Haldol?

I have a question regarding Haldol. My mother-in-law is in the nursing home with dementia and they are giving her Haldol once in the morning and once in the afternoon. What are some of the side effects to this medicine. I am concerned because her behavior has changed drastically in three months.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Haldol is an antipsychotic agent. It contains 'haloperidol' and is used to treat schizophrenia.

More common side effects seen with intake of Haldol include the following:
• Difficulty with speaking or swallowing
• Inability to move the eyes
• Loss of balance control
• Mask-like face
• Muscle spasms with stiffness of the arms and legs
• Trembling and shaking of the fingers
• Weakness of the arms and legs

One needs to be careful while using this drug as it may increase the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in older patients. Most of the deaths were linked to heart problems or infection.
You need to seek medical attention promptly if any of these symptoms become intolerable or persist for a longer duration.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S
