You can opt for iron supplements only if there is demonstrated deficiency of haemoglobin (Hb) in blood. If the Hb is normal, there is no need to take the supplement. Same goes with other vitamins and minerals, as said by your doctor.
Iron supplements can cause hyperacidity and constipation. Increasing green leafy vegetables can give you more natural supplement of iron, as you prefer for natural plant based options.
