What Are The Side Effects Of Levaquin?

Husband was on Levaquin for nine months for a shattered leg. He stepped in a sinkhole that we suspect had a septic tank that the previous owners covered with dirt and bricked over. I always wondered why they had a patio on the side of the house rather than the back. It is an old house. My husbands leg was infected. He had metal put in to repair. Finally a trauma surgeon we saw said get off the Levaquin as you might be masking infection. Our original Doctor hurt his back so badly he had to have surgery. My husband had blood tests March 31st confirming no infection, but no one told us that his good bacteria would die and he would get very ill. He started going downhill in April. By the end of April he staggered in our bedroom with no shirt on. He is 67. I thought he weighed 112 pounds. I called the paramedics and it turned out he had C-dif. He was in rehab for 11 days taking another antibiotic to cure him. Since he s been home he eats every thing that doesn t run away from him first. He acts great and is taking an interest in mowing the lawn and fixing things. Last night he threw up, today he said he had a sudden sharp pain across his right side. I suspected gall bladder as he still has it. Since that first pain. He s had no more and is eating lunch and or dinner. I can t keep track. He lost his appetite on the Levaquin and now wears my tiniest Levi s which ticks me off as I can t squeeze into them. Thank you, sorry so long winded. Marie Boog

Hello,

Your husband was on Levaquin for a long period of nine months for injured leg. Presently, he is having nausea and vomiting, sharp pain across his right side. He has lost appetite and is not taking food properly. He may be suffering from side effects of Levaquin that he has taken for a long periods. People with liver problems should avoid taking Levaquin as it can trigger symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

Other symptoms may be constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, flatulence, headache, insomnia, joint pain, leg pain, exhaustion, etc. You are suggested to get him clinically examined by a GP, get liver function tests, urinalysis, CBC, blood works and imaging tests to detect increased liver enzymes, hepatomegaly or biliary obstruction, etc.

He will be treated accordingly. Help him stay away from addictions if any. The other side effects of Levaquin are tendonitis, peripheral neuropathy, polyneuropathy, dyspnea, light headedness, difficulty sleeping, agitation, confusion, muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis, etc. You are suggested to give boiled, well cooked food to your husband in small amount multiple times a day for a couple of months.

Avoid giving him fried food, oily food, red meat, trans fat, full fat dairy products, refined flour, etc. He can take berries, fruits veggies that are well cooked. Give him food that is good for the liver. He can take liver tonic as a supplement. He can take lean meat and small fish.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
