Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am male,75 been taking omeprozole for about 20 years. I had acid reflux and acquired a hole in my esophagus that healed with good diet and nexium. After all this time with the va omeprozole prescription should I quit? Your article today says it can shorten my reasonably heathy life.
If you do not have any more acid reflux and your espohageal problem has healed then you should stop the drug . No point in taking it without any problems. But Omeprazole is a safe drug and you shouldn't stop it suddenly you should taper it . stopping suddenly may cause a sudden rise in acid production so stop it slowly .
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
