What Are The Side Effects Of Plavix?

I have severe acid reflux and my family doctor wants me to take 2 40mg nexium daily and I am already taking plavix. He thinks there would be no problem but I am afraid to take the nexium along with the plavix. My own mother died at age 48 because of complications due to her blood thinning medication, had a stroke.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The two medications do interact, Plavix and Nexium. Nexium can decrease the effectiveness of Plavix. If Plavix is less effective then it may not work as well. Nexium is in the family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, within that family, pantoprazole is least likely to interact with Plavix, though there is some interaction. Your doctor will want to consider an alternative and also may need to combine with a non PPI to maximize your relief, eg: Famotidine.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
