Hello,
Valparin (
valproic acid) is a medication used to treat seizure disorders, mental / mood conditions (such as
bipolar disorder), and to prevent migraine headaches. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (
neurotransmitters) in the brain.
The most common side effects of valparin apart allergic reactions are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness,
drowsiness, weakness, headache, tremors, problems with walking or coordination, changes in appetite, weight gain.
Valproic acid is sometimes used together with other seizure medications like Topamax 25 mg. Topamax (
topiramate) is also a anti-convulsivant or a medication used to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Common Topamax side effects may include fever, numbness or tingling in your arms and legs, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling, feeling nervous.
My advise for you is to discuss with your son"s treating doctor about these side affects and how long this therapy needs to be continued.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo, Endocrinologist
