Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just been prescribed by my doctor for tiotropium 18 MCG inhalation capsule. In reading about this I see that this drug is also known as Spiriva, which does not have a good history. I just found this out today after leaving my doctors office yesterday. I don t wish to question him but I would appreciate another opinion re: this med. Thank you.
Hi, Yeah tiotropium is also know as Spiriva which is the innovator's brand. The description does not describe about what is concerning you regarding the medication's history. I would give you a general information to address your concern. Tiotropium is an approved drug with specific indications. It can cause bronchospasm and other side effects but it is common with most of the inhalation drugs. And there was this safety information from FDA regarding increased risk of stroke and myocardial infarction. Eventually there was a large trial conducted to look into these concerns. The result showed that tiotropium did not increase the risk. Further, FDA reversed it's stand on safety communication and concluded that there is no association. In conclusion, as of now the evidence says it does not increase the stroke or myocardial infarction risk. I urge you to have a discussion of above information with your doctor. It is always a good thing to discuss about the risks involved with medications with your doctor. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcare magic. Have a wonderful day.
