Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Topiramate has just been prescribed for me. I'm hesitant to begin taking this after reading the side effects. It seems as if there are so many possibilities of side effects. I work as a cashier and need to be clear headed. I also have osteoporosis.
1. Topiramate is an anticonvulsant drug approved by the FDA in combination with phentermine for weight loss. [also used in epilepsy, and prophylaxis of migraine].
2. Your attending Physician must have taken due precautions in prescribing you the medicine, [he must have weighed advantages over side effects], but because topiramate causes loss of calcium through the kidneys and because you have osteoporosis [very dangerous and serious condition] thus you have to stop taking the same and ask him to prescribe some better alternative to the drug.
3. In a recent journal of Epilepsia. 2011 Oct;52(10):1884-9. doi: 10.1111/j.1528-1167.2011.03131.x. Epub 2011 Jun 21.: "The effect of topiramate monotherapy on bone mineral density and markers of bone and mineral metabolism in premenopausal women with epilepsy" the clinical significance after the trial was: "use of topiramate is associated with lower parathyroid hormone and bicarbonate concentrations along with mild hypocalcemia and increased bone turnover, which suggests that topiramate may have long-term effects on bone.
