Hello,
Fibromyalgia is generally treated with antidepressants, among which
Amitriptyline has the best effect according to the studies. Due to the many side effects of Amitriptyline, many patients don't tolerate it well and other antidepressants can be used.
Venlafaxine is also an antidepressant that helps with depression and fibromyalgia and is, in general, better tolerated compared to Amitriptyline or
Nortriptyline so it is a good option that your doctor is choosing.
As for the side effects, as explained above they are not very often and generally not severe but a patient taking Venlaflaxine can have nausea, low appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth,
constipation, problems with sleep can happen. Very rarely it may cause your blood pressure to be higher and reduce the desire for sexual activity. Any bleeding with stools or vomits or a severe cough or
shortness of breath will need urgent medical attention (these are very scarce side effects.)
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
