Hi,
Folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9. It is a B vitamin that plays an important role in DNA and cell formation. It is found exclusively in vitamins and certain fortified foods. Folic acid is used to treat certain types of anemia and a
folic acid deficiency. Women of reproductive age take folic acid to reduce the risks of birth defects.
Although doses up to 5 mg daily have been safely used in some research, doses of Folic acid greater than 1 mg daily might cause feeling unwell or malaise, abdominal cramps,
diarrhea, rash, sleep disorders, irritability, confusion, nausea,
stomach upset, behavior changes, skin reactions, seizures, gas, excitability, abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, bitter or bad taste in mouth,
vomiting, allergic reactions and other side effects. If side effects persist for long or bother you, you should consult your doctor promptly for
medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
