Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am recovering from the gout. My Internal doctor of 50 years recently died, and I now have a new family practice doctor. I recovered from Melanoma a couple of years ago. I am a 79 year old daily drinker of alcohol. REASON FOR CONCERN: The warnings are frightening as usual with prescriptions, but this one targets possible liver damage. I cannot see taking it to keep my uric acid down with so many warnings. Am I off base?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
according to mention history you are having fear of liver damage from the alcohol drinking and let me know that you are right chronic alcohol abuse can affect the liver and can lead to liver damage through its active metabolite like aldehyde. So yes you should investigate for liver damage through two main investigation. One is ultrasonography examination of the abdomen and second you can investigate with the liver enzymes that is SGPT and SGOT.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
