Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father has been operated CABG 2 months back. Currently he is feeling shortness of breath, anxiety etc. He has been admitted again in the hospital. Doctors have find out there is pulmonary edema and fluid overload. Whenever he is feeling anxious of anything he is feeling shortness of breathe again. To minimize his anxiety doctors has prescribed him lonazep MD. My question is: Whether this is correct to give him this drug?e.g. whether it is at all required or not? what are the side effects of this?whether it will form a habit
so your father has undergone CABG, that means he has problems with vessels supplying blood to the heart. when person becomes anxious or nervous the sympathetic nervous system gets activated and also the blood circulation, in this case when person has already poor blood supply, further anxiety will worsen the case..so to reduce the anxiety and avoid any kind of emergency situation, he is given the benzodiazepins like lonazep md 0.5. this will reduce the anxiety and help patient to maintain adequate blood supply for the heart... so it has been given for the proper reason.. about side effects.. it will cause sedation and calm the patient. be cautious that patient is not oversedated, and change the dose accordingly, after consulting your doctor..it is given for the reason and therefore there is no question of habit forming...
