General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Steroids are mainly used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. They are used to treat some conditions like asthma, allergic rhinitis, COPD, urticaria, atopic eczema, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, painful and inflammed joints, SLE, polymyalgia rheumatica, giant cell arteritis, multiple sclerosis, Addison's disease etc. Steroid has side effects too.

Potential side effects of long term treatment include: headache, stomach or duodenal ulcers, increased appetite, weight gain, acne, DM, increased risk of infections, depression, mood changes, mood swings, HTN, delayed wound healing, thinned skin that bruises easily, osteoporosis, withdrawal symptoms caused by suppression of adrenal glands, glaucoma, cataracts, muscle weakness, loss of potassium etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
