Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have fought low potassium for three or four years. Finally found a doctor that is keeping up with it. My level today was 2.9. I don t understand how it works. I know muscles and was told by pharmacist that it also could affect the heart. I m very confused. I do have high blood pressure buy that is under control.
Hi I did review your concern. Low potassium can be due to multitude of reasons like a problem with medications you are taking like for blood pressure or a problem with your kidneys or adrenal glands.
A proper diagnosis is required for accurate management of low potassium as it needs to remain between 3 to 5.5. Low as well as high potassium causes muscle fatigue and weakness, so you do not feel like doing anything. Apart from that low and high potassium affects your heart. First there are ECG changes and later on there can be life threatening arrhythmias.
The low potassium you are having can be due to your blood pressure medication or can be associated with your blood pressure. people with high blood pressure and low potassium without use of any medication causing it can have adrenal problems and need to be evaluated accordingly like a CT scan of abdomen.
I hope this helps wish you all the best. let me know if you have any more questions or concerns. Thank you for using healthcare magic.
