What Are The Side Effects Of Smoking Marijuana?

Hi. I am a pediatrician and saw a 16 yo male today with ADHD and Focalin 15mg XR, and dad informed me he caught him smoking pot. Any studies that you may be aware of that show any bad physical side effects with the 2? Dad very upset but teen says it helps him focus better. Tried to tell him that marijuana use can lower his IQ and affect his short term memory, but he just laughed at me.

Hi,

Your adolescent patient is following a trend of others his age- their knowledge of the risk of marijuana on health continues to decline. Symptoms include: ataxia, sedation, psychosis, anxiety, tachycardia, delirium, and emesis.

He should also know that chronic use can cause: poor academic performance (including less likely to graduate high school), drug addition, other illicit drug use, as well as psychosis as an adult.

He might want to read papers written by incarcerated teens who used illicit drugs. The CDC and AAP are good sources.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd,
Pediatrician
