What Are The Side Effects Of Switching Medicine From Uloric To Allopurinol?
My doctor was providing samples of Uloric 40 mg tablets to me for the past 2 years and now he informs me that Takeda will no longer provide samples to him. He has provided a prescription for Allopurinol 100 mg tablets for me to try. Will I experience any side effects when changing to this new drug?
Uloric contains febuxostat as ingredient. Febuxostat and allopurinol both are uricosuric agent used in treatment of gout or hyperurecemia. Fexustat is more effective than allopurinol in lower dose. Its advised not to change this drug if its effectively controlling your uric acid level with minimum side effects. You can use some other brands of this drug if uloric is unavailable. Again allopurinol is also effective in high dose. There are side effects like abdominal pain, hepatotoxicity, diarrhoea, anorexia, urticaria, renal failure. Serious condition like steven johnson syndrome may occur sometimes. Concomitant administration of thiazide, ace inhibitors, amoxicillin etc have to be avoided. Allopurinol is older drug than febuxostat and used widely for gout. If no alternative brand of febuxostat is available you may take allopurinol. If any adverse affect occurs kindly consult with your physician.
