Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
what are the side effects of Lysteda taken by a 17 year old who has very heavy periods lasting 5-6 days with a 24-25 day cycle? My daughter is a year-round swimmer -- 18 hours/week - so very consistent and intense exercise regime. She is healthy in all aspects, but is side-lined during her period due to heavy flow and cramps. It is ironic to me that her cycle would be this short and her periods so heavy given her amount of exercise and low body fat. Is Lysteda a possible medication which may help her?
Lysteda is composed of 'tranexamic acid', which is a man-made form of an amino acid called 'lysine'.
It prevents enzymes in the body from breaking down blood clots. Hence it is used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding.
Common side effects with its use include pale skin, tiredness or weakness, abdominal pain, back pain, joint pain, muscle cramps, difficulty in breathing on exertion and bruising.
Some side effects caused might not need medical attention. Seek medical attention if they become bothersome and do not improve in spite of taking supportive measures.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
