What Are The Symptoms Of Tourette Syndrome?

I noticed that my 6 year old granddaughter rolls her eyes in a manner that seems as though it s automatic and uncontrollable. I asked her why she was doing that and she replied that she does it to keep her eyes from feeling funny . And then I noticed that her left eye was not in sync with her right eye. Could this be a form of Tourette Syndrome? Should she be seen by a neurologist?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would suggest that your granddaughter gets evaluated by an ophthalmologist first. It is possible that she is experiencing a condition known as strabismus where the eyes don't move in sync due to things like imbalanced muscles. This would cause diplopia or double vision. Its possible that subconsciously your grand daughter has realized that rolling her eyes helps her focus on images better.

There are multiple treatment options for this. If this is not the diagnosis, you could then have her see a neurologist. Tourette syndrome presents with multiple tics like hand movements, coughing, grunting, twitching, etc. It doesn't appear to be the case here.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
