Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am unsure if I have carpel tunnel, can t say that any symptoms wake me up. But over the last few months I have noticed that my index finger on my right hand (mouse hand) is always swollen and it is difficult for me to bend it. I can no longer use it even open things like a bottle of pop or water. My thumb on my right hand also seems to be affected. Any ideas on what could cause this? As an additional FYI - the finger is always swollen, huge difference between the right and left hand.
The commonest cause of carpel tunnel syndrome is hypothyroidism. In this syndrome the fascia of the wrist gets thickened and presses on the nerves and vessels passing under it. Hence the pain and swelling. Treatment involves fasciotomy ie surgical cut to relieve the tension. But first get your thyroid tested
