Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Symptoms Of Congestive Heart Failure?
my mother has an 85% blockage in the left ventricle, which is inoperable and being controlled with medication the medications atenolol and isosorbide. Her doctor keeps trying to put her on a statin, or a statin w/Zetia combination and every time she tries to add this medication she has multiple adverse reactions - bloating, gas, increase in blood sugar, and muscular aches and pains. She has tried to take them many times. Although she has lost 6 pounds (purposefully) her stomach is still bloated when she awakes and she has gas with intermittent constipation. No swelling in her ankles though. She is concerned that these are symptoms of congestive heart failure. I m not sure how to handle this situation. If you call her dr with these questions they just tell you to go to the emergency room.
Please tell me ejection fraction of your mother. Yes gastro symptoms can occur in congestive heart failure but only if EF is less than 30% (generally) and if pt is in decompesated state. Other possibility is drugs like statin can cause GI symptom, muscle pain which is more likely because muscle pain should not present in heart failure.
