The definite diagnosis of diabetes can only be made by measuring glucose levels in blood during fasting and after meals.

Two primary measures are done; blood glucose after 8 hours fasting, and blood glucose two hours after a meal ( post prandial glucose test).

A more comprehensive test is done: glucose tolerance test. This means measuring blood glucose every 30 mins after ingestion of a solution containing specific amount of glucose in the lab.

If diagnosis of diabetes was confirmed, HbA1c test is done to give an idea about glucose levels in the past 3 months.

Other symptoms as weight loss, thirst, and frequent urination are only suggstive and non specific.
