What Are The Symptoms Of Low Sodium?

My son just had meningitis and was prescribed Trileptal and Keppra for the seizures. I have read some info saying that you should check sodium with trileptal and that you can have low sodium with it. My son occasionally has jitters or chills??, could that be a sign of low sodium?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Trileptal causes decrease in sodium level if uses for long time in high doses .
The normal plasma sodium level is 135 mmol/L.
The clinical manifestations of hyponatremia are related to osmotic water shift leading to intestitial cell fluid volume specially brain cell swelling or cerebral edema.
I mean to say main symptoms are brain related or neurological symptoms .
However patient may be asymptomatic or complains of nausea & malaise .
As plasma conc. falls ( further ) symptoms progress to include HEADACHE, LETHARGY , CONFUSION, & OBTUNDATION , STUPOR , SEIZURES & COMA .
If level of sodium falls below than 120 mmol/L , DANGEROUS & LIFE THREATENING.
Hope information is good for you.
