What Are The Symptoms Of White Matter Disease?

A friend has had several health problems since childhood -- one being polio. In the past years (she is in her 60 s), she has had strokes, head traumas and surgeries, falls, loss of memory at times, and many other things that I m not sure of. Her husband has asked me to find out more of White Matter Disease, which I don t know of. She has been to several doctors in the past 5 years and has had lots of tests. One year she went to Mayo in Rockford, MN, for tests but with no satisfactory conclusions as to what is going on. Any information (simple) you may give would be beneficial to her husband. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

White matter helps you problem-solve and focus.
It also plays an important role in mood, walking, and balance.
So when something’s wrong with it, you might notice:

i) Trouble learning or remembering new things.
ii) A hard time with problem solving
iii) Slowed thinking
iv) Leaking urine
v) Depression
vi) Problems walking
vii) Balance issues and more falls

There isn’t a specific treatment. The goal is to treat the cause of the damage and stop the disease from getting worse. Your doctor may prescribe medicines to lower blood pressure or cholesterol. Age-related white matter disease is progressive, meaning it can get worse. But you can take steps to stop it from spreading. Scientists think you might even be able to repair the damage, if you catch it early.

Some tips for prevention of white matter disease:
Keep your blood pressure and blood sugar in check. That can lead to white matter changes. To keep your heart healthy, follow a low-fat, low-salt diet, and get about 2 and a half hours of moderate-intensity exercise each week. Manage diabetes if you have it and keep your cholesterol in check.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards-
Dr Sanjay Kini
