hi my friend recently went in for a operation on polyps of the throat during the operation her throat swelled and she was given a cortisone injection and the doctors were unable to remove any of the polyps because of the swelling, she was told that she probably had a allergic reaction to the metal, she was then told that she would have to wait a further 3 to 4 months because if they tried again in a month and has another reaction she could go into allergic shock, i think now they are talking about using titanium metal but is there a test you can do before to see if you are allergic to that we are british living in greece and there is a slight language barrier also can polyps not be removed by laser thank you
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling in the throat can occur as a result of an allergic reaction. Allergy can occur in response to metal as suspected by your doctor. Swelling of throat of two occasions is quite convincing that the reaction was due to use of some metal during surgical procedure. Titanium is a very inert metal and no reaction is expected to occur with its use. Thus, you can safely use titanium without expecting an allergic reaction. Polyps are not usually removed by laser. Surgical removal is the best way to remove the polyps.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
